Abstract:

Objective: Bimalleolar ankle fractures are complete bone fractures affecting the distal end processes of the tibia and fibula. Our study's objective was to evaluate the functional outcome of neglected bimalleolar fractures at the last follow-up at the University Hospital of Brazzaville.
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study that was carried out on 16 patients who presented with a neglected bimalleolar fracture at the University Hospital of Brazzaville between January 2021 and December 2023, a period of three years (36 months). 16 patients were evaluated, including 10 women and 06 men. There were 16 cases of malunion of the bimalleolar fracture. The mean age of the study was 48.12 years, standard deviation of ±18.83, (range: 25-65 years).
Results: 16 patients with neglected bimalleolar fracture including 10 women and 06 men. Of all 16 patients with malunion of bimalleolar fracture, no complications were found at the last follow-up. Among the 16 operated patients, 14 were very satisfied or 87.5% and 02 were satisfied at the last follow-up or 12.5%. All our 16 patients had an excellent Kitaoka score of 88.75/100. The average for ankle function was 35/40, for pain was 38.75/45 and for alignment was 15/15.
Conclusion: Bimalleolar breaks are breaks that are basically surgical, they are common breaks that must be appropriately overseen to return patients to their standard functional level. Surgical intervention permits for restoring of the ankle run of movement. Open reduction and inside fixation give considerable results in the long term.
