Abstract:

Objective: To report the outcomes of limb trauma management in adults aged eighteen (18) and over in our department.
Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, descriptive study conducted in the Department of Traumatology-Orthopedics and Reconstructive Surgery of the Niamey National Hospital in Niger over six months, from September 1, 2023, to February 28, 2024. The study included all adults aged eighteen (18) years and over who sustained limb trauma and received treatment in our department. The studied parameters included epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and prognostic aspects.
Results: Over six months, we recorded 1,424 cases of trauma in adults aged 18 and above, of which 602 cases involved the limbs, representing a frequency of 42.27%. There was a male predominance of 89.37% (n=538), with a sex ratio of 8.40. The mean age was 36.51±6.04 years, ranging from 18 to 94 years. All trauma cases (100%) resulted from road traffic accidents. The lower limb was the most affected site, accounting for 86.71% (n=522) of cases. Surgical treatment by osteosynthesis was performed in 74.75% (n=450) of cases, while orthopedic treatment (Plaster immobilization) was used in 25.25% (n=152). The therapeutic outcomes were favorable in the vast majority of cases, and there were no recorded deaths.
Conclusion: Limb trauma in adults aged 18 and above is common in our context. The cause of injury was exclusively road traffic accidents. Surgical treatment was the primary approach and yielded positive outcomes in the vast majority of cases.
